Zach Leahy, left, was the hero for Wittenberg in its buzzer-beater victory over Wooster. |
Wittenberg defeated No. 5 Wooster 56-55 in the 101st meeting between the rivals on a Zack Leahy basket at the buzzer off a missed three pointer.
As has often been the case when Wittenberg plays Wooster, the game was closely contested from tip to finish. Neither team led by more than six and the score was tied nine times. Xavier Brown scored Wooster's last six points, but he committed a turnover with the Scots up one and 27 seconds left. Wittenberg's Josh McKee took and missed a three pointer on the ensuing possession but Zack Leahy grabbed the rebound and laid the ball in at the buzzer for the victory. The Tigers improve to 2-0 in the NCAC while Wooster drops to 1-1, 5-1 overall.

Women's action
UW-La Crosse outlasted No. 21 UW-Whitewater 71-68 in overtime in an early example of how hard it is to win on the road in the WIAC. The Eagles built a 16-point halftime lead in front of their home crowd but the Warhawks used a 20-6 run during the second half to tie the game at 49. With the Eagles leading 58-56, Whitewater's Kaitlyn Thill drew a foul on La Crosse's Leah Harms with one second remaining in regulation and hit both free throws to send the game into overtime. The Eagles made enough free throws in overtime to grab the victory and improve to 6-2, 1-1 in conference.
Joanna Snyder scored 20 points and Ohio Northern won its fifth consecutive game, this time edging No. 25 Otterbein 52-50. Morgan Dumbaugh hit the winning shot for the Polar Bears with five seconds left. No. 11 Williams held off previously unbeaten Skidmore 47-31 in a defensive struggle.
Outside the Top 25, Messiah defeated Scranton 55-49 and the Falcons denied Mike Strong sole possession of first place on the all-time list for Division III women's basketball coaching victories. Strong's next chance to break the record will be December 17 at Cabrini, which is coached by former Scranton player Kate (Dougherty) Pearson. DeSales knocked off Kean 85-78 in overtime behind a balanced attack and 25 points for Sondrine Glovas.
