CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (9-1, 2-0) returned to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Saturday afternoon as they won their seventh in-a-row with a 71-58 road win at Pomona-Pitzer (P-P).
AJ Wick and Colbi Zorich got the Bulldogs out to a quick 6-0 lead. They extended that lead to 13, 19-6, after Leila Hosn found Carly Hicks for a three.
In the opening 90 seconds of the second quarter Aliyah Anderson had four points and put Redlands back ahead by double figures, 25-14. P-P, though, scored the next four points before Zorich had four points and each of Avery Shiring, and Hosn had two each to give the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game, 35-20.
Despite the strong midpart of the quarter, the Bulldogs conceded a 10-0 Sagehen run over the final 3:24 and their offense was held scoreless for nearly five minutes as the lead was only five, 35-30, at the half.
Across the first six plus minutes of the second half P-P extended their run from the first half to 23-4 and were in front by four, 43-39.
Olivia McIntyre then got to the line and made both before Teagan McIlroy got into the paint after a turnover to tie the game at 43. Those four unanswered points sparked a stretch where they scored 11 of 15 points and were back in front after 30 minutes, 50-47.
After struggling on both ends of the floor in the third, their offense scored 15 points and allowed only six points in the first eight and a half minutes of the fourth which put them ahead by 12, 65-43, and helped them seal the hard fought SCIAC road win.
Redlands were fantastic in the first and fourth quarters, outscoring P-P by 19 points.
Wick finished with a game-high 19 points and added six rebounds. Hosn once again flirted with a triple double, missing it by two rebounds and two assists while adding 12 points across 31 minutes.
The Bulldogs will be back inside Currier Gymnasium next Wednesday, January 7 at 7 p.m. for a matchup with California Institute of Technology.
