REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (9-5, 4-1) won their sixth-straight game following their 81-55 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Wednesday evening.
Leila Hosn opened with a quick four points for an early 6-4 lead. The Bulldogs then took a three-point lead, 12-9, thanks to free throws by AJ Wick and Sophie Christopher.
Wick and Colbi Zorich scored the first four points of the second quarter before the Athenas drew within three, 16-13. At the 6:44 mark Zorich found Alex Facelo who made a three before Leaya McKinney found Carly Hicks for a 22-13 lead.
CMS responded with a 12-9 run down to the 1:41 mark of the half, but Redlands held them scoreless the rest of the way and Krista Karban knocked down a baseline jumper with 13 seconds left in the half and they went into the break leading by eight, 33-25.
After a mostly competitive first 20 minutes, Redlands changed that with a third quarter where they outscored CMS by 15, 21-6. They held the Athenas to less than 20 percent shooting and shot 57 percent. Kayden Sanders was a spark off the bench with five points and a perfect 2-for-2 mark from the field.
The second quarter was the highest combined scoring quarter with 37 total points. That total paled in comparison to the 51 points the two teams combined for in the fourth.
The Bulldogs' lead was as large as 26 inside of three minutes when Andrea Perkins found Sanders for a fastbreak three. After a pair of Athena threes Hosn then set up Perkins for her own three.
Hicks made a free throw and then made a three pointer to give Redlands their first 30-point lead which got as large as 33 on an Avery Shiring free throw.
Hicks finished with 15 points thanks to four made threes. Zorich and Hosn both had double-digit scoring nights. Zorich added eight rebounds and Hosn had seven assists.
Redlands hosts Whittier College this Saturday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m. in game one of a doubleheader with the men's team.
