Valley Scores 30 to Lead Westfield State to Brandeis Tip Off Title

Westfield State sophomore forward Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) scored the game winner on a layup with 2 seconds left in regulation time to complete an Owls' comeback.  Westfield had trailed 37-26 at the half and 63-50 entering the fourth quarter.

Trailing by a dozen points a minute into the fourth the Owls rattled off a 15-4 spurt to get back into contention.  Valley scored the first six points of the run with a pair of free throws, a jumper and a layup, then added back to back three-pointers to cap the run and cut the Judges lead to 69-68 with 4:07 left in regulation time.

Westfield took a 74-73 lead on Valley's layup with 42 seconds to play, but Brandeis tied the game at 74-all with 30 seconds to play as Sydney Sodine connected on one of two free throws.

 Westfield's McCarthy then got the game winneir on a layup with two seconds to play.Brandeis got off a three-point try as time expired but could not connect.

Westfield State improves to 2-1 on the season, while Brandeis drops to 2-1.   McCarthy was the only other Owl in double figures with 14 points and added seven steals. Junior center Rebecca Sapouckey (Granby/Chicopee, Mass.) added eight points and seven rebounds.

Brandeis was led by Frankie Pinto and Maria Jackson, who each scored 18 points.

The Owls will host Eastern Connecticut State on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. before breaking for Thanksgiving.
