WAYNE, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University led by as many as five points in the first half before William Paterson University broke open a close game with an 11-2 run midway through the second half as the Pioneers posted their 25th consecutive win over NJCU, 78-70, in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball action on December 3 at the Rec Center.
After a 3-0 start to the season, NJCU (3-3, 0-3 NJAC) has dropped its last three since the start of conference play. Meanwhile, the Pioneers improved to 5-2 overall and maintained an early-season share of first place in the NJAC at 3-0.
In a sloppy game for both sides, the schools combined to commit 63 turnovers with only 34 forced via steals. NJCU was responsible for 35 giveaways. Remarkable, WP only had a 28-27 edge in points off turnovers.
The loss spoiled yet another double-double for one-time NJAC Player of the Week and sophomore power forwardBria Smith (Bayonne, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) who registered the 13th double-double of her career and third of the season, with 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals in 31 minutes. She shot 5-of-11 from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw stripe. She has now converted 27 of her last 29 foul shots.
