Eisner, Barron, Muskies do it again, rally to defeat MSOE

Leah Eisner (Sr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) went over the 20-point mark again and the Lakeland College women's basketball team forced 20 turnovers by Milwaukee School of Engineering in a satisfying 68-62 win Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at the Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies used a big effort to come back from multiple deficits and win consecutive games for the first time all season, improving to 8-11 overall and 5-9 in the NACC. With Rockford (Ill.) University's loss to Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday, Lakeland also now is tied with Rockford for eighth in the conference standings.

The Muskies rallied from separate 11- and 7-point deficits in the second half alone and proved to be the tougher team over the course of 40 minutes. Lakeland trailed almost throughout the contest but continued to work and chip away, and all that work finally paid off late in the second half.

Lakeland finished the game on a 15-2 run over the final 5:20, and Trista Barron (So.-Escanaba, Mich.) scored 10 points in that stretch, including a pair of huge three-pointers. Her first three got the run started shortly after Shannon Larson's layup made it 60-53 in favor of MSOE, and her second triple made it 63-60 with 3:12 to play, giving the Muskies a lead they would not relinquish.

Barron also hit all four of her free throw attempts in the final minute. In all, she scored 10 of her 12 points in the final 5:14.

Eisner also played a big role in the win with 21 points and eight rebounds. She made 8 of 15 from the field and picked up her play in the second half with 14 points as well as a pair of blocked shots.

Eisner and the rest of Lakeland's defense also played a key role in the win. The Muskies frustrated MSOE (12-7 overall, 10-4 NACC) in the second half with a full-court press that led to 12 Raider turnovers and in general knocked a previously efficient offense out of sync. Eisner and frontcourt teammate Vashia Gordon (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) also limited MSOE forwards Larson and Holly Denfeld to just 4-for-12 shooting in the second half, after the high-scoring Raiders duo had made 10 of 12 shots in the first half.

MSOE shot 56.0% (14 of 25) and held the Muskies to 34.6% shooting in the first half in building a 33-26 halftime lead. Those roles reversed in the second half, though, as Lakeland shot 50.0% (13 of 26) while the Raiders dropped to 30.8% (8 of 26).

Lakeland shot 42.3% (22 of 52) for the game and also was an excellent 21-for-25 (88.0%) from the free throw line. Bailey Grayvold (Fr.-Norway, Mich.) joined Eisner and Barron in double figures with 10 points, while Kayla Clark (Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) led the team with five assists.

Denfeld paced the Raiders with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Larson added 14 points. MSOE, which has turned around from a 2-22 record last year to become one of the top challengers in the NACC this year, was playing without second-leading scorer Megan Kroll, who is out with a knee injury.
