Terriers Topple Mariners in Final Minutes

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy fell to Thomas College on Tuesday night, 84-73 inside of Smith Gymnasium.

 

The two teams were deadlocked for most of the first half, until back-to-back three-pointers from Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) and Nick Holt (Ellsworth, Maine) put the Mariners ahead 28-24 with 4:17 remaining. The Terriers clawed back taking a 35-32 lead into the half following an Adam Carlsen three at the buzzer.

 

Maine Maritime came out strong in the second half, scoring seven-unanswered points to hold a 39-35 lead, but the Terriers took back the lead just moments later when Eric Westbrooks hit two from the line with 16:42 remaining. Despite coming close numerous times, the Mariners never held the lead again, and Thomas went on to claim the victory.

 

Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) lead the Mariners with a team-high 17 points, while adding four rebounds, two assists and a two steals. Holt finished the night with 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists, while Zachary Radcliffe (Rumford, Maine) grabbed 10 points, two rebounds and an assist.

 

Eric Westbrooks scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Terriers, including going a perfect 9-9 on the line, while adding seven rebounds, four assists and a steal. Teammate Justin Murray contributed 20 points, two rebounds and a steal, while Mike Akanji scored 17 points, four rebounds and an assist.

 

The Mariners will hit the road this weekend for a pair of NAC contests, when they travel to New England College on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Colby-Sawyer Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m..
