CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland shot 76 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 26-point halftime lead and the Red Dragons defeated visiting New Paltz, 84-56.
Cortland upped its record to 12-8 overall and is tied with Oswego for fourth place in the SUNYAC standings with a 7-6 league mark. Cortland will play at Oswego Saturday at 8 p.m.
Senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) made all eight of his shots from the floor, including two 3-pointers, and finished with 22 points and six rebounds. Sophomore T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) made 4-of-5 shots from the 3-point arc and ended with 14 points, five assists and four steals.
Sophomore Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Freshman Chris Williams (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) scored a career-best 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) contributed nine points and five assists, senior Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) scored nine points on three 3-pointers and freshman Tyree Glascoe (West Hempstead) made both of his 3-point attempts and finished with eight points.
Taylor Sowah (Bronx/Miller Place) led New Paltz (6-14, 3-10 SUNYAC) with 14 points and eight rebounds. Nick Taldi (Merrick/Bellmore JFK) added nine points and Keegan Donovan (Groton) had eight points and five assists.
Cortland made 19-of-25 shots in the first half, including 8-of-11 from downtown. The Red Dragons finished at 53 percent overall and 14-of-28 from the arc. New Paltz shot 41 percent in the first half and 36 percent for the game.
Cortland led 17-4 on a Hefele 3-pointer with 14:21 left in the half and its lead never dipped into single digits. Spendjian was 3-for-3 from the arc in the first half, including back-to-back triples that pushed the Red Dragon lead to 39-14 with 6:25 remaining.
Williams scored the final six points of the half on a conventional 3-point play with 37 seconds left and a 3-pointer from the right side at the buzzer and Cortland led 55-29 at the break. The Red Dragons were up by at least 26 points the entire second half.
