NEW YORK, N.Y.— York College men's basketball player Michael Woods scored 31 points in the Cardinals' 108-73 win over the City College of New York on Monday, giving him 600 points for the season and making him the new single-season scoring record holder at York.
Woods surpassed the record of Elliot Bruce, who scored 599 points back in the 1985-86 season. The junior guard broke the record in just 21 games, which is eight fewer games than it took Bruce to reach his total. This is the second record of Bruce's that Woods has broken this season. On January 15, Woods snapped Bruce's single-game scoring record of 43 points, when he scored 44 in a win over Medgar Evers College.
It's been an incredible year for the Brooklyn native so far. This season, Woods is averaging 28.6 points per game and ranks second in NCAA Division III in scoring. He has scored over 30 points 12 times this season and 40 or more points twice.
CCNY had no answer for York on the night. As a team, York shot .609 from the field, its highest percentage of the season. The 108 points was the highest total of the year for the Cardinals and it marked the fourth time they've reached triple digits in 2013-14.
York controlled the game right from the start, jumping out to a 17-6 advantage in the first six minutes of action. Sharpshooting helped York get an early cushion, with Du'Quan Lawson, Donald Rodriguez and Omar St. John connecting on three-pointers. The Cardinals extended their first-half lead to 17 points before CCNY cut the deficit back to 11 before halftime.
In the second half, York turned the game into a rout. The Cardinals quickly extended their lead to 35 points after opening the second half with a 22-8 run in the first eight minutes. St. John was once again a big part of the stretch, scoring 12 of those points.
St. John had one of his best games of the season, scoring a season-high 28 points, while connecting on 10-of-12 shots from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Lawson finished with ten points and matched his career-high in assists, with ten. Jaron Williams finished with 14 points, four blocks and two steals and Terell Roper added eight points and three steals. In addition to Woods' 31 points, he also finished with a season-high six assists.
The win improves York's record to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in CUNYAC play. CCNY drops to 5-14 overall and 3-9 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals will return to action on Friday when they visit Medgar Evers College at 8 p.m.
