TIFFIN, Ohio—Junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) poured in a game-high 18 points and junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, but the Heidelberg University men's basketball team could not overcome a late surge by Capital University in an 80-73 overtime loss tonight in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio.

The Student Princes (1-3, 0-1 OAC) shot better than 40 percent for the first 40 minutes, but cooled off in overtime, shooting just two-of-nine from the field. Despite the loss, Heidelberg had four double-digit scorers for the fourth time in as many games this season.

The Crusaders (3-2, 1-0 OAC) posted a four-of-seven shooting mark and went three-of-four from the line in overtime to seal the victory.

The game featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes, as neither team led by more than seven points throughout the game.

In addition to Givner and Davis, who was seven-of-eight shooting from the field, senior guard Darion Capers (Clayton/Trotwood-Madison) scored 16 points on a seven-of-16 night and sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) added 12 points and eight rebounds of his own. The Student Princes shot a respectable 42.5 percent (31-of-73) from the field, but was five-of-23 from three-point range and just six-of-12 from the line.

With the score tied, 11-11, Capital began a 7-0 run—capped by a Ben Danoff lay-up—to take an 18-11 lead at the 10:56 mark of the first half.

The Berg then went on a 12-5 run of its own, spanning nearly six minutes and tied the score, 23-23, when Fortkamp converted a fast break with 5:05 on the clock.

Ben Jackson gave the Crusaders what they thought would be a 31-30 lead going into halftime with a lay-up at the 10-second mark, but a half court shot by Givner at the buzzer sent the Berg into the break with a 33-31 advantage.

In the second half, the Student Princes led by as many as six points on three separate occasions, with the last coming at the 6:53 mark when Capers sank a jumper to give the Berg a 61-55 lead. A Capers foul sent Tim Cammon to the free-throw line where he made both shots to cap a 7-0 run and give Capital a 62-61 lead at the 5:05 mark.

The Berg countered with a 5-2 run of its own, retaking the lead at 67-63, as junior guard Quintin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) made a lay-up with four minutes to go in regulation, but Capital closed the second half on a 6-2 run to send the game into overtime.

Heidelberg held its last lead of the game at the 2:45 mark, clinging to a 73-71 advantage as Capers made another lay-up halfway through the period.

Capital was three-of-four shooting and three-of-four from the line from that point forward to escape with the win.

The Crusaders had five double-figure scorers, led by Jackson with 17 points on an eight-of-13 night, Winter with 16 markers, and Spencer Niekamp with 12 points.

Heidelberg returns to the court Saturday, Dec. 3 when it faces Wilmington College in an OAC game in Wilmington at 3 p.m.
