PITTSBURGH -- Matt Johnson led four Maroons in double figures with 20 points as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated host Carnegie Mellon University 79-71 in University Athletic Association play Sunday afternoon.
Chicago (8-12 overall, 5-4 UAA) fell behind 24-12 eight minutes into the contest, but the Maroons outscored the Tartans 18-4 during the period's final 5:38 to take a 39-34 advantage at the break. Tom Williams and Johnson combined for 13 of the Maroons' final 18 points of the half.
Chicago maintained the lead in the second half until Matthew Petit's layup with 11:27 to go put Carnegie Mellon (6-13, 3-6) on top 51-50. Petit led the Tartans with 20 points.
John Duhring's three-pointer gave the Tartans a 60-57 edge at the 6:39 mark, but the Maroons answered with a 9-1 run to build a 66-61 lead with 3:34 to go. Williams capped the run with his third 3-point field goal of the day. He finished the game with 17 points.
Steve Stefanou and Matt MacKenzie scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Chicago won for the third time in its last four games.
Johnson connected on 10 of 11 free throw attempts en route to his fourth straight 20-point performance.
Christian Manoli tallied 14 points for the Tartans, while Duhring added 13.
Sunday's win snapped the Maroons' seven-game conference road losing streak.
The victory also kept Chicago tied for third place in the UAA standings, three games behind league-leading University of Rochester with five conference contests remaining. Chicago's next game is at Rochester this Friday at 8 p.m. (ET).
