DOVER, Del. - Five players scored in double figures as Wesley College took over possession of second place in the CAC standings with a 106-97 win over Mary Washington.
Darrell Johnson (New Castle, Del./Howard) scored 27 points and Paul Reynolds (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) netted 20 to lead the Wolverines. Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) had 19 points, Chris Douglas (Landover, Md./Jericho Prep Academy) 17 and Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) added 14.
Wesley (9-6, 5-1 CAC) needed all the points to fend off a 32-point evening from the Eagles' (11-4, 5-2 CAC) Tad Dickman, who also had 11 rebounds in the game.
The Wolverines scored eight unanswered points in the final 61 seconds of the first half to carry a 50-42 advantage at the break. Douglas hit a pair of throws and made a three before another long range shot by Thomas finished the scoring in half.
In the second half, Wesley continued to build the lead and was up by 17 after a lay up by Darrell Johnson made it 76-59 with 10:25 to go.
The Eagles slowly began chipping away at the lead, however, and a foul shot by Walt Smith made it 90-87 with 2:39 to play. Douglas made a pair of foul shots, but Dickman answered with a lay up with 2:02 to go to make it a one possession game, 92-89. Reynolds scored just eight seconds later, however, and Mary Washington never got within five the rest of the way as the Wolverines hit 12-of-14 free throws down the stretch.
Darrell Johnson hit 10-of-16 field goals to lead Wesley and also grabbed nine rebounds to go along with four steals. Reynolds shot 7-of-9 from the floor. Kevin Johnson was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, while Douglas hit 9-of-10 free throws, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Thomas went 5-of-9 from the field with four threes off the bench.
Both teams shot well from three-point range. Wesley went 10-of-21 (48 percent), while Mary Washington went 11-of-27 (41 percent).
Dickman hit 10-of-14 field goals for the Eagles, blocked four shots and had three steals. E.J. Willis scored 17 points, Bradley Riester added 16 - including four threes - and Smith had 13 points and seven assists.
