The Moravian College men's basketball team couldn't finish off a second half rally, falling to DeSales University, 70-64, in non-conference action Tuesday in the Greyhounds' 2010-11 home opener in Johnston Hall.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-0 after three-pointers from junior guard Tom Marshall and sophomore guard Brian Kerwin and a lay-up by sophomore forward Brian Hunter, and DeSales would lead the entire game. Moravian would get within a point, 13-12, on a three-pointer from sophomore guard D.J. Strayhorn with 12:16 to go in the half, and again at 15-14 on a lay-up by senior forward Chris Cullen with 8:53 on the clock, but that would be as close as the Greyhounds would get.
Marshall hit a lay-up with 3:33 left in the first half for the final points of the opening 20 minutes, sending DeSales to the locker room with a 29-21 lead. The Bulldogs were ten-for-29 from the floor (34.5 percent), five-for-nine on three-pointers and four-for-five at the foul line in the first half, and DeSales had just five turnovers at the break. Moravian struggled to shoot the ball, making eight-of-32 field goal attempts (25 percent), two-of-17 three-pointers and three-of-four free throws in the opening half. The Greyhounds did have a 22-20 edge in rebounds.
Moyer hit a lay-up 11 seconds into the second half to put DeSales ahead by ten points, 31-21, and the lead would reach 13 points, 42-29 on a lay-up by Hunter with 16:36 to play. Moravian answered with an 11-2 run to pull within four points, 44-40 on a three-pointer from freshman guard Kenny Gula at 11:55 but the Greyhounds could get no closer.
DeSales eventually pushed the lead back to 13 points, 61-48, on a three-pointer from junior forward Bob Zanneo with 4:01 to go only to have Moravian get back within six points, 66-60, on a three-pointer from Strayhorn with 40 seconds remaining.
Both teams saw their shooting percentages improve in the second half. The Bulldogs were 12-for-26 from the floor (46.2 percent), four-for-12 on three-pointers and 13-for-18 at the foul line while Moravian made 18-of-38 field goal attempts (47.4 percent), five-of-14 three-pointers and two-of-seven free throws in the final 20 minutes. The Greyhounds did finish the game with a 42-40 edge in rebounds while turning the ball over 17 times. DeSales had 18 turnovers in the game.
Moravian had six players in double figures with Cullen having a double-double at 16 points and 13 rebounds to go with two assists and two steals. Senior guard Ryan O'Donnell tossed in a career high 15 points for the Greyhounds with 13 points in the second half to go with three assists and two rebounds while Strayhorn had ten points, seven assists and three boards. Sophomore forward Blake English had seven points, five rebounds and a pair of steals for Moravian while sophomore guard Garrett Johnson tossed in seven points with five boards and three steals. Gula finished with five points while junior forward Chris Cullinan had four points off of the bench.
DeSales had four players in double figures with Moyer, Hunter and Kerwin each tossing in 13 points. Moyer added seven rebounds while Hunter had seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Zanneo had 11 points and four boards off of the bench for the Bulldogs while Marshall had six rebounds, five points, three assists and three steals.
