John Carroll defeated Mount Union by the largest margin of victory in the 101-game history of the series, Otterbein snapped a 20-game losing streak against Marietta, and the Baldwin Wallace women took over sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, Trey Barber made his return for Christopher Newport.
The No. 8 Blue Streaks (13-1, 7-0 OAC) scored 58 points in the first half and started the second half on a 16-4 run in defeating No. 12 Mount Union (12-2, 5-2) by a final score of 96-61. Luke Chicone and Chase Toppin scored a combined 27 points just 13 minutes into the game. The 35-point margin of victory was JCU's largest in the history of the series between the two schools. Toppin finished with 21 points, while Frazier added 18, Chicone 17, and Jerry Higgins III added 10.
"I think we definitely made a statement to the rest of the OAC with this win," Chicone said after the game. "Obviously the job is not finished and we have more work to do but this game definitely gives us a boost the rest of the way."
JCU plays Marietta next, on Saturday. The Pioneers lost to Otterbein for the first time since Jan. 23, 2013. The Cardinals snapped their 20-game losing streak but shooting 60% from the floor, 86-70. Marietta (11-3, 5-2 OAC) scored eight of the first 11 points of the second half to cut its deficit to five points, but Otterbein (9-5, 3-4) scored the next six and never looked back, leading by as many as 20 points. Chase Garito recorded a double-double for the Cardinals with 21 points and 11 boards, while Cam Evans finished with 21 points.
Christopher Newport big man Trey Barber, who hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer for the Captains in last year's national title game, returned after missing six games and had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in an 87-71 win at Marymount. Toa Hollenbeck led all scorers off the bench with 22 points, while Jahn Hines added 16 and had nine boards in the win. CNU, which wnet 5-1 in Barber's absence, improved to 13-4.
UW-Stevens Point came up with the first big WIAC win of the Kent Dernbach administration as the Pointers defeated No. 8 UW-Whitewater 100-92. Details are sparse as the homestanding Pointers have not posted any stats on their website -- however, UW-Whitewater reports that Josiah Butler scored 24 points and Malik Abdul-Wahid added 22 points for UWSP (8-6, 2-1 WIAC). Miles Barnstable led all scorers with 25 points for Whitewater (12-2, 2-1).
Coe won its 11th consecutive game, as the homestanding Kohawks defeated No. 18 Dubuque 63-59 behind 16 points from Cael Schmitt and 15 apiece from TJ Schnurr and Bennett Sherry. It's Dubuque's first loss of the season after 13 victories. The Spartans pulled within three points with just under 8 minutes to play, but Schnurr scored nine points the rest of the way to hold off the visitors.
Pomona-Pitzer improved to 2-0 in SCIAC play and 10-2 overall as the Sagehens defeated No. 24 Redlands 93-85. Joe Cookson shot 7-for-13 en route to a game-high 23 points, while adding 12 rebounds and seven assists. Kendrick Currey hit a 3-pointer for Redlands (9-3) with 1:07 to play, as part of an 8-0 run to cut the Bulldogs' deficit to 85-83, but Pomona-Pitzer was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final minute to secure the win.
Women's wrap: BW alone atop OAC
Baldwin Wallace (11-3, 7-0 OAC) had four players score in double figures led by Alyssa Miller, as she scored a career-high and game-high best tying 16 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, as BW moved into first place all alone in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Kaycie Badylak chipped in a season-best 11 points, while two more players added 10 apiece. Ohio Northern (8-5, 6-1) had two players score in double digits led by senior All-American guard Bryn Serbin as she matched the game high with 16 points. ONU got as close as 61-55 in the fourth quarter before BW went on a 6-0 run to take a 67-55 lead en route to the 67-58 final.
Alivia Giles and Gabbi San Diego each registered double-doubles as No. 5 Christopher Newport defeated Marymount 87-77. Both players set career highs as Giles poured in a personal high 28 points to lead the offense while San Diego became the first player in nearly 15 years to dish out 10 or more assists with a career-high performance in her first career double-double. The Captains and Saints battled back-and-forth for most the game with 11 lead changes and six ties until a fourth-quarter 13-2 burst by the home team extended the lead to double digits in the final minutes.
Millikin, playing at home for the first time since Dec. 6, enjoyed the Griswold Center environs, defeating Wheaton (Ill.) 86-47. The No. 18 Big Blue jumped out to a 14-2 advantage in the first quarter and never looked back, leading 51-22 at halftime. Elyce Knudsen led Millikin (12-3, 4-2 CCIW) with 22 points and seven rebounds.
No. 22 UW-Stout lost its second consecutive game, falling to 1-2 in the WIAC, losing at home to UW-La Crosse 67-62. The Blue Devils (11-3, 1-2) led by as much as 11 early on and led by seven at the half. But La Crosse opened the second half on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 37 just two minutes into the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, neither team scored for nearly four minutes before Amanda Giesen broke the drought with a layup to put Stout up 56-54. The Eagles (9-5, 2-1) regained the lead on the next possession and quickly pushed the lead to five with 2:23 left to play. Lexi Wagner Kept Stout close with back to back treys to keep Stout within one with a minute to play but the Blue Devils could not get over the top.
Olivia Rangel posted a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as Carroll rolled past Elmhurst in a 94-69 win. She is just the fifth women's player with a triple-double this season. Emilie Wizner added 25 points in just 24 minutes of action to help the Pioneers improve to 12-3, 5-1 in the CCIW. The win is Carroll's seventh in a row.
