No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan and No. 7 North Central (Ill.) used stifling defense to shut down Top 10 opponents.

Virginia Wesleyan held No. 10 Cabrini to 22 first half points on 27 percent shooting (9-for-33) and held a 17-point lead at the break. The Marlins hit eight three pointers in the second half and cruised to a 96-59 victory.

No. 6 North Central (Ill.) battled No. 7 Hope to a virtual standstill at home before its defense took over. The Cardinals led the Flying Dutch 46-44 with 9:28 remaining and held Hope without field goal the rest of the way. The Cardinals were 13-1 at home and 7-0 out of conference last season.

No. 11 St. Thomas capped an excellent trip to the west coast by beating No. 14 Whitworth 70-65. The Pirates trimmed the Tommies' 10-point lead to three points with 43 seconds left but St. Thomas made seven of eight free throws to clinch the victory.

No. 3 UW-Whitewater opened its national title defense with a 75-68 win over Beloit. Conference mate UW-Stevens Point rallied to beat St. Olaf 82-81 on a Joe Ritchay three with seven seconds left.

Adrian scored a road victory over No. 13 Wooster 57-56 thanks to a buzzer beater by Cody Barnes and Eric Lewis' 26 points. Barnes hit his game winner from 18 feet out as time expired. Stevens did not need a buzzer beater as the Ducks upset No. 20 William Paterson 71-55. Stevens shot 73 percent from the field in the second half (16-for-22).

Catholic posted another impressive performance at the Hoopsville Classic. One night after the Cardinals rolled past No. 16 Transylvania, Catholic handled No. 19 St. Mary's (Md.) 65-52. The Pioneers bounced back to hold off No. 24 Randolph-Macon 56-54.

Salisbury is off to a good start for the second year in a row, as Travon Vann scored 30 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the Sea Gulls' 85-82 win against Lycoming. Salisbury is 3-0 after winning Lycoming's tournament.

There was a premium on scoring when King's edged Susquehanna 44-43. The teams shot a combined 19 percent from behind the arc (6-for-31). UW-Oshkosh defeated Edgewood 64-54 to snap the Titans' 18-game losing streak dating back to last season. Northwestern (Minn.) topped UW-River Falls 78-69 by holding the Falcons to four assists and 14 turnovers.
