Women's wrap: Comets shoot past Wildcats

Lindsey Smith broke Texas-Dallas' scoring record and her team upset No. 19 Louisiana College on Saturday. Southern Maine ended Rhode Island College's long win streak while Mary Washington kept its streak going.

Texas-Dallas and Louisiana College battled to a 61-61 score late in the second half when Lindsey Smith went to the basket for two points to give the Comets their first lead and break Texas-Dallas' career scoring mark. Smith finished with 16 points giving her 1,318 in her career. The Comets shut out the Wildcats for the final 2:38 and went on to win 69-61. Louisiana College was picked first in the NCAA's first South Region rankings.

Nicole Garland scored a career-high 26 points to lead Southern Maine past Rhode Island College 72-68. The loss snaps the Anchorwomen's 17-game winning streak, but they are still likely to clinch the Little East regular season title. Rhode Island College plays Plymouth State (5-17, 1-11) on Wednesday.

No. 8 Mary Washington stayed perfect thanks to another stifling defensive performance. The Eagles held York (Pa.) to 30.0 percent shooting (18-for-60) and just 19.0 percent behind the arc (4-for-21_ in a 54-48 win. No. 1 Amherst completed a perfect regular season by trouncing Middlebury 80-50. The Lord Jeffs open the NESCAC tournament against Trinity (Conn.) next Saturday. The Bantams lost in overtime to Williams 80-76.

Kelly Kika's nine three-pointers were a school record for La Verne, which set a Division III record for three-pointers in a game.

La Verne set a Division III record, draining 26 three-pointers in a 113-61 win against Pomona-Pitzer. The previous record was 24, set by Sewanee against Judson (Ala.) earlier this season. Kelly Kika came off the bench to hit nine of them, helping her score 32 points in just 20 minutes of action.

Greensboro kept its USA South Athletic Conference title hopes alive with a dramatic 57-54 win at Christopher Newport. Andrienne Terrell hit a 35-foot buzzer beater to give the Pride a regular season split with the Captains. The Pride trail Ferrum by a game in the standings but the Panthers swept Greensboro this season. Ferrum kept its conference lead by beating Methodist 73-62.

Hartwick stayed red-hot and in first place in the Empire 8 by beating St. John Fisher 81-72 in overtime. Kate Purcell scored 31 points and added 14 rebounds for the Hawks who have won 20 of their last 21 games. Ithaca, which is one slot in front of Hartwick in the regional rankings, eased past Alfred 68-37.

No. 7 Mount Union scored the last 11 points of its game against Ohio Northern and beat the Polar Bears 72-68. The Purple Raiders clinched the top seed in the OAC tournament. No. 17 Lebanon Valley did the same in the MAC Commonwealth by beating Albright 74-48. Olivia Lett's 25 points pushed No. 25 Illinois Wesleyan past Carthage 57-53, giving the Titans a share of the CCIW title for the fifth consecutive season.

Gwynedd-Mercy rolled over CSAC champion Neumann 90-57 to clinch the top seed in the conference tournament. The Griffins have won 13 straight. St. Norbert shot a stunning 70.8 percent from the field (34-for-48) and ran over Carroll 97-46. Eureka won its 11th consecutive game as Khassandrae Brown had 25 points and 11 rebounds in an 82-80 win against Fontbonne.
