Front and Centre

Greg Ross' late free throws were the difference for Centre against Cabrini.

On the last full day of Division III basketball in 2011, top-ranked Middlebury edged Salem State to stay unbeaten and Centre knocked off No. 10 Cabrini in overtime. On the women's side, No. 4 Calvin rolled over UW-La Crosse.

Salem State already upset No. 7 Williams earlier this year and the Vikings nearly did the same to No. 1 Middlebury, but the Panthers held off the Vikings 66-63. Jake Wolfin gave Middlebury a 60-57 lead with a three-pointer late in the second half. After Salem State closed within one, Joey Kizel sank two free throws with 18 seconds left to push the Panthers' lead back to three. Nate Simpson missed a three-pointer on the Vikings' last possession, finishing a rough game from behind the arc for Salem State (three-for-16). Wolfin and Kizel scored Middlebury's final 21 points over the game's last 11 minutes.

Centre gave No. 10 Cabrini its first loss of the season, 69-67 in overtime, by making free throws at the end of regulation and the extra period. With 2.8 seconds left in regulation, Cabrini's Cory Lemons drained a jumper to give the Cavaliers a 57-56 lead. Centre inbounded the ball to Greg Ross who was fouled with 0.4 seconds left. Ross made one of two free throws to push the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Goran Dulac drilled a three-pointer for Cabrini to tie the game at 67 with 20 seconds left. On Centre's next possession, Ross got the ball again and was fouled, this time with 0.3 seconds left. He hit both free throws to lift Centre to its fourth straight win. Cabrini slips to 9-1.

Joe Nesci became NYU's all-time leader for coaching victories as his Violets crushed Hamilton, 83-46. NYU scored the game's first 13 points and never looked back. The Violets are undefeated while Hamilton drops to 9-2. No. 22 Birmingham-Southern improved to 10-1 by nipping Clark 58-57 in Louisiana. The Cougars missed two shots to win the game on their final possession. Zac Richards had 17 points for Birmingham-Southern.
