Mike Strong and his Lady Royals celebrate another
milestone victory. |
Scranton head coach Mike Strong picked up his 750th career win on Friday night as Scranton cruised past Goucher 91-38. Strong also moved within eight wins of breaking Division III women's basketball's record for career coaching wins.
There was not much suspense whether the Lady Royals would get Strong the milestone against Goucher. The Lady Royals closed the first half with a 30-7 surge that put them up 47-20 at the break. Scranton finished with 14 three-pointers and its bench outscored the Gophers' reserves 54 to six.
Strong's 750 wins leaves him just seven behind former St. John Fisher coach Phil Kahler for the Division III women's basketball career victories record. If the Royals keep winning, Strong could tie Kahler's mark in the first round of the NCAA tournament or the Landmark tournament final, depending on whether a postponed game against Messiah is rescheduled.
As icing on Scranton's celebratory cake, Catholic upended Moravian 70-64 to give the Lady Royals' sole possession of first place in the conference. It was the Cardinals' first victory against Moravian in Bethlehem, Pa.
Elsewhere No. 2 Amherst pounded Tufts 73-35 to improve to 20-1, 6-0 in the NESCAC. Jaclyn Daigneault scored 18 points in just 22 minutes and the Lord Jeffs shot 53 percent from the field. The Jumbos slip to 15-4, 4-3 in conference. No. 7 Washington U. won by almost the same score as the Bears dominated Carnegie Mellon 73-37. They remain one game behind UAA leader Chicago which beat Case Western 65-55. Ranked at No. 12, the Maroons have now won 12 straight.
Not all Top 25 teams got through the night unscathed. Bowdoin defeated No. 8 Williams 62-53, giving the Ephs their first loss in NESCAC play and second overall. The Polar Bears have beaten Williams in 15 of their last 16 games.
Men's action
There's still a game left to play tomorrow, but it's already been a pretty great week for the Great Lakers. Oswego State landed the top spot in the NCAA's first East region rankings and then won its ninth straight game, this time besting Cortland State 69-53.
Hartwick came from behind to defeat St. John Fisher 68-64, giving the Hawks another big road win. They are in second place in the Empire 8 but have won at first place Ithaca and third place St. John Fisher.
In Top 25 action, St. Norbert stymied Monmouth 62-42. The Green Knights held an opponent below 50 points for the sixth time this season. They can clinch a share of the MWC regular season title by beating Grinnell tomorrow. No. 24 Illinois Wesleyan got a sorely needed road win at Elmhurst 72-68. No. 4 Williams took care of Bowdoin 85-66 in a matchup of regionally ranked conference foes.
Mitch Tordoff forced overtime with a three-pointer then hit a half-court buzzer-beater in overtime to lift Carroll to a 70-67 Midwest Conference win at Knox.
