On Friday night the Seahawks battled Olivet in a clash of Preseason All-Americans. The Comets. Michael McClary scored 37 points and Olivet led by as many as 18 in the second half. But St. Mary's (Md.) rallied and its All-American, Alex Franz, hit a game-winning three at the buzzer to give the Seahawks an 82-81 win. St. Mary's won again in less dramatic fashion on Saturday beating Lawrence 89-80 at the Cruzin' Classic in Florida. Sam Borum led the Seahawks with 25 points and 10 rebounds. It was Chris Harney's 100th career coaching victory.
In a rematch from the 2010 NCAA Tournament Washington U. defeated No. 12 Illinois Wesleyan 83-75 in overtime. Washington's Alan Aboona hit an off-balance three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime where Spencer Gay scored nine of his 21 points for the Bears. Washington U. improves to 5-4 while the Titans slip to 7-2.
One day after McMurry announced its headed to Division II, the school nearly had a big win over a Division I program. Southern Methodist held on to beat McMurry 70-67. No. 24 Chapman stayed undefeated against Division III opponents with a 60-57 victory over Oglethorpe. Marietta stayed undefeated against all opponents by beating Ohio Northern 79-77. Tyler Hammond had 21 points in just 19 minutes for the Pioneers. Ferrum (9-0) took care of Lancaster Bible 90-70 to stay perfect. Rutgers-Newark (10-1) dropped its first game of the season at Neumann 77-72 in overtime.
In women's action Hope keeps rolling along and winning by comfortable margins. The Flying Dutch defeated Wittenberg 69-48. Fifteen players saw action for Hope which has won every game by double digits. Mount St. Mary tripped No. 19 William Paterson 60-44. William Smith played its first home game of the season and grabbed a 72-70 victory over previously unbeaten Cortland State.
