Danny Jones scored 16 in just 14 minutes off the bench to lead No. 2 Randolph-Macon to an 84-62 win against Shenandoah on a busy night of Division III basketball action on Friday night. It's the Hornets' second loss to a Top Five ODAC team in the opening week. The Yellow Jackets take on host Gettysburg on Saturday.

Western Connecticut knocked off No. 22 Plattsburgh State 86-80, earning Colonials coach Bob Campbell his 500th career win.

Andrew Locke scored 17 off the bench on 7-for-9 shooting as No. 9 Middlebury survived an opener at Baruch, 63-60. Jake Wolfin broke the 15th tie of the game with a jumper with six seconds left to give the Panthers a 62-60 lead, then, after Lionel Hilaire missed two free throws with two seconds left for Baruch, Locke sealed the game with a foul shot. Baruch fell to 1-1.

Elmira posted an upset in the first round of Franklin and Marshall's tournament, knocking off Albright 77-70. They'll go on to face the host No. 7 Diplomats, who cruised past Penn State-Abington.

Division III fans from the '90s might well do a double-take in seeing that Gallaudet beat Wilkes 74-66. The Bison were down 17 at half and 19 early in the second half before finishing the game on a 46-19 run as Layton Seeber scored 18 of his 24 after halftime. And John Jay has surpassed its win total from last season, picking up victory No. 2 on the year, 69-66 against Keuka.

Friday's women's action
DePauw got off to another strong start in a great opening-weekend tournament year after year. DePauw, this year's host, faces off with Illinois Wesleyan and Washington U. in an annual tournament that rotates sites. This year it's just a three-team event, but what a power-packed lineup it is, with the defending champion Bears, No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan and DePauw at No. 12.

The hosts struck the first blow, as four players scored in double figures including Brooke Osborne, who scored a career-high 20 as the No. 12 Tigers knocked off the No. 3 Titans 77-65 in the season opener for both schools.

Sophomore Taylor Wilson was outstanding off the bench, scoring a career-high 24 points to lead the Manhattanville women to their first win against a ranked team since 1982, beating No. 18 Bowdoin 66-62. No. 17 Mary Washington dropped to 0-2 on the young season with a 60-54 setback at Randolph-Macon.

UW-Whitewater lost some key contributors from last season, including two D3hoops.com All-Region selections, but got a double-double from Dana Thompson (28 points, 11 rebounds) in knocking off No. 24 Calvin 60-54.

St. Vincent passed its first test as a fully vested Division III women's basketball team and its first game as a member of the D3hoops.com Top 25 with flying colors, defeating Ohio Wesleyan 92-53.

Moravian fell to 0-3 as freshman Sarah Innerst scored 24 points for Delaware Valley in a 77-72 win.
