George Fox and Cal Lutheran had very different women�s basketball seasons in 2008-2009. The Bruins went undefeated and won a national championship while the Regals scuffled along at 7-18. But the Regals reigned on Sunday, ending George Fox�s 36-game winning streak with a 54-48 win at home.
After Cal Lutheran led for much of the game, Keisha Gordon�s jumper drew No. 4 George Fox even at 47 a piece with two and a half minutes left. The Regals held the Bruins without a field goal the rest of the way. Cal Lutheran had 10 players score, none of them reaching double-digits, compared to just four scorers for the Bruins who shot 5-for-31 (16 percent) from three-point land in the loss.
No. 25 UW-Stout fought back to .500 in the young season with a victory over No. 24 St. Benedict, 85-76. The Blue Devils started the season 0-3 and may have righted themselves just in time. Conference play begins Wednesday when No. 23 UW-Stevens Point travels to Menomonie. More women�s scores.
&&g-boxl&&On the men's side, No. 2 John Carroll defeated No. 9 Wooster 71-63 in a battle of ranked conference champions. The Blue Streaks closed the game on an 11-3 run and forced 26 Scot turnovers. Matt Crozier had 18 points and 10 rebounds for John Carroll who improves to 4-0 while Wooster drops to 2-3 with two loses to highly ranked opponents. More men's scores.
No. 19 Randolph-Macon opened the home portion of its schedule with a resounding victory over No. 7 DeSales, 87-63. Yellow Jackets held the Bulldogs without a field goal for a nine minute span in the first half, building a 20-point lead in the process. Randolph-Macon shot 56 percent from the field in the game. Darnell Braswell and Brian Hunter scored 21 points a piece for DeSales.
For the third consecutive game, Eastern Connecticut took a NESCAC opponent to overtime and for the third time the Warriors came out with the win, this time outlasting Connecticut College 75-74. As close as that game was, the battle between New Paltz State and Keene State was even closer. Shereef Taylor hit a three-pointer with four seconds left in double overtime to lift the Hawks over the Owls, 110-109. Taylor and teammate Harris Wichard scored 54 of New Paltz State's 110 points. Eric Fazio went 11-for-11 from the floor for Keene State.
Back in women's action, Tufts rode its starters to a 60-50 win over No. 9 Brandeis. The Jumbos' starting five logged 171 of 200 total possible minutes led by Julia Baily (20 points, 15 rebounds, 35 minutes). Thomas More cruised past Oglethorpe 82-56 to finish an impressive weekend at home. Lindsay Burton tallied 20 points and 16 rebounds in Johns Hopkins' win over York (Pa.), 75-66.
