Next Wednesday the first womens regional rankings of the year will be released. On Saturday several teams made their case for a high debut in those rankings.
The Northeast ranking could look a lot like the NESCAC standings with No. 9 Amherst and Bowdoin at the top. The Lord Jeffs erased a one point halftime deficit and built a second half lead that No. 15 Tufts could not overcome, defeating the Jumbos 54-48. Jaclyn Daigneault had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Amherst, her third straight double-double. Bowdoin stayed tied for first with Amherst by cruising past Williams 91-58. Katie Bergeron led the Polar Bears with 22 points and five steals. More womens scores.
No. 3 Rochester will likely top the East region rankings but Cortland State made its case for a strong position by beating Plattsburgh State 60-56. Jessica Laing scored 21 points and senior Kristin Ciccone tied her career high with 18 as the Red Dragons improved to 17-3.
&&f-boxr&&Leading the Top 25 poll did not guarantee No. 1 St. Thomas the top regional ranking on the men's side, but No.1 Illinois Wesleyan hopes things will be different on the women's side. Christina Solari scored 18 points to lead the Titans to a 62-46 win at Carthage. No. 8 George Fox also remained undefeated by holding down Puget Sound in a 49-38 victory. No. 12 York (Pa.) won its 20th consecutive game, beating St. Mary's (Md.) 75-60.
No. 25 Texas-Dallas got its revenge for last week's road loss, getting the home win against No. 22 Mississippi College 61-54. More surprising was UW-River Falls splitting its season series with No. 5 UW-Eau Claire. The Falcons put five scorers in double figures and knocked off the Blugolds 69-63
No. 8 Messiah is on the threshold of capturing another MAC Commonwealth title after beating Lebanon Valley 71-59. The Falcons have a three game lead with three games remaining. Albright can't catch Messiah but it did upset No. 14 DeSales 55-53. The Bulldogs scored just five points in the final eight minutes.
Occidental and La Verne each won to remain tied for first in the SCIAC. Gwynedd-Mercy ended Cabrini's undefeated run through the CSAC, topping the Cavaliers 55-50. Alverno broke the program's record for wins, picking up its ninth with a 56-50 win against Rockford. Chatham tied the program's record for wins (10, set last season) with a 58-56 win against Geneva.
