Leah Rubega's last-second layup gave Bowdoin a 63-61 win at No. 4 Amherst on Friday night, knocking the Jeffs from the ranks of the unbeaten and snapping the team's 25-game home winning streak.
It appeared heroics would not be necessary, as Bowdoin jumped out to an early lead and held a 43-34 advantage early in the second half, but Amherst rallied to take a 57-56 lead with 2:54 left. The Jeffs also led 61-59 before Alexa Kaubris hit two free throws and a Bowdoin steal with 10.3 seconds left set up the game-winner. Friday's women's scores.
&&f-boxl&&A long men's winning streak came to an end on Friday night as well, as DePauw dropped No. 8 Trinity (Texas) 61-54 behind 19 points from Mike Moore. Trinity, which had won 15 consecutive games, shot just 5-for-24 from three-point range in the loss. Friday's men's scores.
Sean Wallis had a double-double with 12 points and 11 assists as No. 2 Wash U won 80-75 at Brandeis. It's the highest point total Brandeis has allowed this season. St. John Fisher's run in the Top 25 could be short, as the No. 21 Cardinals lost their first game since entering the poll, a 52-51 defeat at Hartwick.
Vassar coughed up a 21-point lead but held on to beat Union in overtime 87-80. Skidmore rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 2:46 to beat RPI 63-62.
Amherst's loss means there are two unbeaten teams remaining in Division III women's basketball, and No. 7 George Fox made sure it stayed on that list with a 77-46 rout of Whitworth. Three of the five Top 25 UAA teams won, though that was the maximum possible as No. 20 Chicago lost at No. 10 NYU and No. 18 Brandeis lost at home to No. 24 Wash U. Fifth-ranked Rochester handled Case Western Reserve 63-51.
Cortland State won its ninth consecutive game, beating Potsdam 80-63 and remaining unbeaten in the SUNYAC behind 21 from Jessica Laing and 20 from freshman Michelle Volpini.
