Division III basketball in Wisconsin is always unpredictable but it was even more so on Tuesday night thanks to the Midwest Conference upsetting two ranked WIAC teams. St. Norbert defeated No. 1 UW-Platteville 70-68, rallying from a 15-point halftime deficit at home. Curt Hanson hit a three-pointer to pull the Pioneers within one with five seconds left. The fourth time was the charm for Carroll, which upset No. 5 UW-Stevens Point 85-71 behind John Hoch�s 28 points. The Pioneers lost their three previous games against WIAC opponents but improve to 6-3 with the road victory.
&&g-boxr&& No. 3 St. Thomas rallied from a nine-point second half deficit and forward Alex McCoy scored half of his points in the extra period as the Tommies won 72-69 in overtime at Division II Concordia-St. Paul on a Tuesday night in which five of the top six Division III men's basketball teams were in action.
The Tommies, who remained undefeated, won the battle between the unbeaten leaders of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the D-II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. McCoy finished with 14 points and stole the Golden Bears' full-court inbounds pass to seal the victory.
Elsewhere two tournament teams from a year ago who got off to a slow start this season ended 2008 with big wins. Randolph-Macon took care of No. 13 Ursinus 75-63 for its sixth consecutive win after starting 1-3. Mary Hardin-Baylor got a measure of revenge for four football loses and evened its basketball record at 4-4 with 73-67 win over No. 6 UW-Whitewater. The Crusaders' Tilmon Gaddy celebrated his 24th birthday in style, with 31 points in the victory.
No. 10 Buena Vista survived two last-possession attempts to tie and held on to beat Cal Lutheran 68-65. It's just the second loss for the Kingsmen, who fell to 8-2. No. 18 Centre got 22 from Kris Bentley and 21 from Danny Noll and bounced back with a home win over Maryville (Tenn.) 78-72.
