The Top 25 men�s rankings got a makeover with the release of the first poll of the regular season on Monday. Nine new teams grabbed poll positions and five took them out for a spin for the first time tonight.
No. 18 St. Mary�s (Md.), which entered the Top 25 after winning the Provident Pride of Maryland tournament last weekend, defeated another instate opponent, Stevenson, 80-71. Alex Franz�s double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) led the Seahawks whose ranking is their highest ever in the ten year history of the poll.
No. 12 Capital, which has been ranked in many polls before this year, stayed undefeated by downing Ohio Wesleyan 80-72. No. 19 Carnegie Mellon dumped Juniata 76-56.
&&b-boxr&&The new ranking may be short-lived for No. 22 Transylvania which lost at Hanover 55-53 to open HCAC play. Roland Millien scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Bridgewater State upset No. 20 Mass.-Dartmouth 89-87. More men�s scores.
In women's action, No. 15 UW-Eau Claire picked up its sixth win by knocking off Division II Minnesota-Duluth 67-52. Heather Witt's 22 points helped the Blugolds to their best start since 2004-2005.
No. 3 Kean had its first road game and its first single-digit margin of victory. The Cougars, who won their previous four games by an average of 31 points, held off Richard Stockton 88-80. No. 7 Hope won its 25th consecutive game against an MIAA foe, this time beating Albion 80-54. More women's scores.
In other men's action No. 2 UW-Whitewater survived North Central (Ill.) 62-54 to set up a Saturday showdown with No. 7 UW-Stevens Point. For the second year in a row Elizabethtown beat Division II MIllersville, this time by a count of 70-65. Maryville (Tenn.) did the same to Division II Carson-Newman in a 94-91 victory. Franklin & Marshall (5-0) stayed undefeated with a 79-66 win at Johns Hopkins.
