Quakers shaken; Warhawks whacked

No. 8 Guilford had defending national player of the year Ben Strong, but the Quakers weren't strong enough to get past St. Mary's (Md.) in the first round of the tournament. The Cinderella Seahawks stunned Guilford and will play Widener in the second round after the Pride dispatched Averett 87-78.

Loras scored another improbable upset at No. 2 UW-Whitewater when Kyle White drained a three with 15 seconds left to stun the Warhawks 71-70. Kevin Koskie tried to answer White's heroics but his shot rimmed out. White, a senior, finished with 33 points and extended his career by at least one more night. No. 9 UW-Stevens Point got off to a sluggish start as No. 24 Chicago took a 17-0 out of the gate. But the Pointers bounced back and eventually bounced the Maroons 67-53 at St. Thomas. UW-Stevens Point answered Chicago's opening run by scoring 26 of the next 28 points and held the Maroons scoreless for 13:50. The Pointers will face Buena Vista, which held on down the stretch to beat the homestanding Tommies 72-70.

&&b-boxr&&In the other first-round meeting of Top 25 teams, No. 11 Washington U. defeated No. 17 Wooster 79-74 to take the rematch of last year's tournament game. Troy Ruths scored 28 points for the Bears, who will meet No. 6 Augustana. Fellow 2007 Final four participant Virginia Wesleyan moved past WPI 80-75 thanks to a 31-point performance by, who else in March, Ton Ton Balenga. The Engineers got 24 points from Antoine Coleman in the NEWMAC MVP's final career game. The Marlins play No. 16 Ursinus tomorrow night.

Maryville (Tenn.) had its streak of nine consecutive first-round wins snapped as No. 14 Millsaps defeated the No. 18 Scots 80-72. Wheaton (Ill.) might have been the last team into the tournament, but they won't be among the first out. Andy Wiele (28 points, 11 rebounds) and Kent Raymond (23 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles for the Thunder, who knocked off No. 15 Lawrence 93-83 in overtime.

Aswad Thomas scored 18 points and Elms put the North Atlantic Conference into the second round for the first time with a 71-53 win against Scranton. The Blazers' pressure pushed the Royals to 22 turnovers and held them to just eight field goal attempts in the first 14 minutes of the second half in pulling away. Mary Hardin-Baylor survived a 10-for-23 night at the foul line and 21 turnovers in edging Fontbonne 65-62.

Bowdoin shot an incredible 13-for-17 from three-point range and made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999 a memorable one in crushing Curry 79-49. Jon Onyiruka and Jeff Juron combined for 22 second-half points and Rochester held Middlebury to 4-for-22 three-point shooting as the Yellowjackets beat the Panthers 56-43.
