The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference had a pair of thrillers in Thursday night's tournament semifinals, as No. 21 St. Thomas rallied to beat Bethel and Gustavus Adolphus survived five missed Carleton shots in the final minute of overtime to win 71-70.
St. Thomas, the top seed, ended the game on a 9-1 run to surge past Bethel, the preseason pick to win the league. B.J. Viau finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the 69-68 win. Gustavus Adolphus had to score six points in the final 14 seconds of regulation just to get to overtime but got the job done, with three-pointers from Tyler Kaus and Jesse Van Sickle sandwiched around the missed front end of a one-and-one. &&g-boxl&&The top two teams in the Atlantic Region rankings will meet for the New Jersey Athletic Conference title after No. 1 Richard Stockton edged Ramapo and No. 2 William Paterson beat Montclair State on Thursday night.
Jerome Hubbard scored the last five points, including a pair of free throws with 22 seconds as Richard Stockton rallied from four points down in the final 99 seconds to edge Ramapo 60-59. Hubbard finished with 20 points. Four Pioneers were in double figures in scoring as William Paterson improved to 19-6 overall with its 71-61 victory. Jason Cameron led the Pioneers with 16 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Eighth-seeded Salisbury's run in the Capital Athletic Conference ended, with a 95-89 loss to St. Mary's (Md.). The Seahawks will play at Mary Washington for the title on Saturday night. Salem State and Westfield State will play for the MASCAC title after Westfield went on a 20-0 run and knocked off No. 2 seed Fitchburg State. Emerson, the only GNAC team in the regional rankings, will play Emmanuel for the conference title.
Aurora had the only significant Pool B result of the night, rolling past Milwaukee School of Engineering 89-64. Webster saw its 15-game winning streak snapped, falling to Maryville (Mo.) in the SLIAC semifinals. Maryville and Fontbonne will meet for the conference's automatic bid. Puget Sound shot 59 percent from three-point land (13-for-22) to beat Willamette at home for the second consecutive game, 87-82. The Loggers travel to top-seeded Whitworth, which had a bye to Saturday's NWC final.
