On a collision course

Around the Nation

Three unbeaten teams remain in Division III women's basketball, after Howard Payne's rally Thursday night to beat No. 9 McMurry. But two of them appear destined to meet in the playoffs, if only because of their relative proximity.

No. 1 Hope has been rolling through the 2007-08 season virtually without a hiccup, outscoring opponents by nearly 23 points per game en route to its 19-0 record. The Flying Dutch run strong, tall and deep, with only one scorer averaging in double figures and the reviews are glowing. "The amount of talent that they have is incredible," says one coach, while another says, "It's so hard to play them because they come at you in waves."

Of course, No. 5 Thomas More is in the same region as Hope, and although the women's basketball committee has done a great job building and balancing its bracket in recent years, they could still meet up early. The Saints have already beaten two former national champions this season en route to their unbeaten record and are looking for more.

Also, what are the keys to victory for each? What basketball rule most needs to be changed? What are the big games for the weekend and who is pursuing a record winning streak?

All that in Around the Nation.
