NJCU player hits triple-double

Senior forward Vanessa Vargas Espinoza, in her only semester at New Jersey City, got written into the school's women's basketball history by notching the third known triple-double in school history -- finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists -- as the Knights defeated New York City Tech 66-47, in a non-conference contest on Monday at Klitgord Gymnasium.

NJCU snaps a four-game losing streak, and improves to 5-13 overall, while City Tech falls to 5-16, with its fourth straight loss. Espinoza's triple-double was the first since Shondelle Browne compiled 12 points, 13 rebounds and 12 steals against Rowan on Jan. 12, 2002.

"I was just trying to get a win and get my teammates involved," Espinoza said of her milestone night. She finished shooting 7-of-14 overall and 5-of-9 from three-point range, with 20 points, 10 rebounds (eight defensive), 11 assists, five blocks, five steals and only one turnover in 36 minutes. She had 18 points alone in the first half, shooting 6-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range, as NJCU built a 38-22 halftime margin.

For Espinoza, who played at Ramapo from 2002-05, the assists and blocks were both career highs; her previous best for assists was five. In four years, she now has 884 points and 123 three-pointers between the two schools.
