Polar Bears freeze Ephs

Chris Shalvoy scored 30 and Kevin Snyder added 25 but Bowdoin shot 53 percent from the floor and had five players in double figures as the Polar Bears won 78-73 on Friday night. Freshman guard Randy DeFeo scored 15 points in his first career start, while Mike Hauser went 9-for-12 from the foul line en route to 17 points.

It was the ninth consecutive win for Bowdoin, which improved to 13-2. Shalvoy and Snyder combined to shoot 16-for-25 from the floor and 12-for-18 from three-point range, but the rest of the Ephs were 4-for-27 and 0-for-8. Friday's men's scores.

On the first night of NESCAC play, Amherst's women remained undefeated as Sam Swensen's buzzer beater lifted the No. 22 Lord Jeffs to a 64-62 win at No. 14 Tufts. Amherst remained unbeaten and handed Tufts its first loss.

After the eighth tie of the game, at 55-55, Tufts scored six of the next seven points to lead 61-56 on a lay-up by Khalilah Ummah at 2:14. Senior tri-captain Anne-Claire Roesch hit a three-pointer on the Lord Jeffs' next trip down the floor to make the score 61-59 Tufts.

The teams traded free throws before a layup by senior tri-captain Stefanie Reiff tied the score for the ninth time at 62-62 with 30 seconds remaining. The Jumbos missed a shot, got the offensive rebound, but turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation, setting up the winning shot.

No. 4 NYU fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as well, as Alex Porter and Helen Baroody combined for 18 second-half points for No. 22 Rochester in a 62-55. Jessica McEntee had 19 points and 13 rebounds but was the only Violet in double figures. Friday's women's scores.

The Vassar men beat Hamilton for the first time in six years, as Tyson Brazell and Brian Butterworth scored 18 apiece in a 77-72 overtime win. No. 2 Brandeis won at No. 24 Carnegie Mellon and No. 1 Rochester beat NYU at home, setting up Sunday's No. 1/No. 2 showdown.

St. John Fisher, the Empire 8's reigning champion, showed it is still a factor in the conference race by beating No. 15 Stevens 71-59. Lawrence held Grinnell to 55 points, about half of its per game average, in a 79-55 victory. Monique Salmon picked up a triple-double (13 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) as Baruch dropped Medgar Evers 87-64.
