No. 1 University of Rochester will probably be holding on to that billing into the New Year. Jon Onyiriuka scored 22 points, pacing the Yellowjackets in a 75-57 victory over local rival St. John Fisher on Friday. Rochester also got 21 points from guard Robert Dominiak. They may meet the Cardinals again in the near-future, but they'll get to rest for nearly a month before playing in the JP Morgan Chase Tournament beginning Jan. 9.
Elsewhere, Springfield was a giant-killer again, topping No. 25 Rhode Island College, 79-77. It marked the second time this season that the Pride, now 3-5, have beaten a top 25 team, having previously won at then-No. 21 Trinity. Pat Crean scored the winning points on two free throws with 11 seconds left. The win avenged a loss against Rhode Island College on a neutral floor earlier this season.
In women's action, No. 21 Medaille crushed Buffalo State, 69-40, as Amanda Baker scored 22 points in 25 minutes. More scores on the men's and women's scoreboards.
Among the significant games on Stagg Bowl Saturday: No. 9 Augustana visits No. 13 UW-Oshkosh in men's action, while No. 8 Southern Maine faces a tough road contest at 6-1 Salem State in women's play.
