Rochester passes first No. 1 test

Rochester survived its first game as the No. 1 team in Division III men's basketball. The Yellowjackets made a 58-54 lead 65-56 and went on to defeat Rochester Tech 80-70. Rochester shot 67% from the floor in the first half en route to a 43-27 lead before the Tigers' rally. Full story.

Rhode Island College entered the Top 25 this week while Trinity (Conn.) fell out, and Tuesday night's result bore that out. Junior Tirrell Hill scored 12 and classmates Cameron Stewart and Bobby Bailey added 11 and 10 as the Anchormen edged the Bantams 70-68.

It's hard to get out of the Northeast, as Emerson continued its surprising unbeaten season, putting six players in double figures in beating MIT 91-81. No. 2 Brandeis pounded the boards to a 54-22 advantage and needed almost every one of them to beat Curry 78-67.

In women's action, No. 23 UW-Eau Claire put four players in double figures and shot 61.5% from the floor in the first half in beating Carleton 76-53. Puget Sound improved to 5-2, with just one game against a Division III opponent, beating Oregon Tech 58-48 before a 17-day layoff.
