Those who thought the NESCAC was just about the likes of Amherst, Williams and Trinity, might want to think again. Tufts, which almost knocked off No. 3 Brandeis earlier this season, won at No. 16 Keene State, 81-67 on Tuesday night. Jon Pierce had a monster game for the Jumbos, now 3-2, with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocked shots. Meanwhile Brandeis warmed up for Saturday's showdown with No. 1 Amherst by beating Clark, 82-71. Sophomores Terrell Hollins and Andre Robertson combined for 41 points.
It was a relatively uneventful night for upsets, with the biggest of the others being Springfield surprising No. 21 Trinity (Conn.), 62-57. The Bantams shot just 30.6 percent from the field. No. 18 Calvin lost its second in a row, falling for the second time to 9-0 NAIA rival Aquinas 78-62. More scores on the Scoreboard.
Sherrard Prezzie-Blue scored 36 in Wentworth Tech's win over Framingham State. The CUNYAC had a pair of eye-opening upsets, relatively speaking, as two-time defending champ York lost at home to Brooklyn, while New York City Tech topped 2007 league tourney finalist Staten Island.
&&b-boxr&&The night's most exciting game came with Dominican topping Concordia (Ill.) in double overtime.
On the women's side, No. 12 Illinois Wesleyan won easily at Fontbonne. Scranton dropped from the top 25 for the first time in a long time, then lost its Landmark League debut to Moravian, 63-61. The Lady Royals had won their previous 43 league games. Sophomore forward Alyssa Bisci paced a balanced Moravian attack with 15 points. Two unranked teams, Tufts and Lebanon Valley, both continued perfect starts to their seasons, beating Salem State and Rowan, respectively. More scores on the Scoreboard.
