Defending champs take first defeat

Defending national champion DePauw lost for the first time since last February as senior Amanda Link scored a tournament record 22 points to lift Thomas More past the Tigers, 65-59 on Sunday. Link scored 14 of the first 27 points for the Saints in their second win in three games against a quality opponent. Thomas More beat Wilmington, which received votes in the preseason Top 25, over the opening weekend.

"After the loss in the NCAA tournament (last season), the coaches and players had to do some soul searching," said Thomas More coach Brian Neal. "We had to raise the bar of the program. To do that, you have to beat great teams. They don't come any better than DePauw and Wilmington."

The Tufts women improved to 4-0, dealing preseason No. 14 Brandeis its second loss of the year 57-43. Trailing 37-22, Brandeis went on a 15-3 run and forced a shot-clock violation on the following possession, but was unable to take advantage as Tufts scored the next seven points to put the game away. More of Sunday's women's scores.

In men's action, the Provident Pride tournament championship game swelled to three overtimes as that's how long it took McDaniel to outlast Hood, 85-84. It's McDaniel's first 3-0 start since 1986-87. The game was the fifth of the 12-game event that required an extra period, including all three Goucher games. Goucher lost all three, tying a Division III record for consecutive overtime games and losses. More of Sunday's men's scores.

Lake Erie finally got its impressive non-conference win, dumping No. 8 Wooster 86-84. No. 12 Brandeis rallied from six points down with three minutes left, using a 10-0 run to edge Tufts 89-87 behind 23 points from Kwame Graves-Fulgham. Rob Dominiak scored 11 points during a 17-3 run as No. 9 Rochester came from behind to defeat Ohio Wesleyan. Dominiak finished with 26 points, including 8-for-11 shooting from 3-point range.
