Two Lynchburg basketball players were injured Wednesday morning when the small plane in which they were traveling crashed 50 miles north of New York City.
LC students Jason Early and Sean Sutherland were passengers in a plane piloted by Jason's father, Brian, when it went down near the town of Maybrook, N.Y. Jason Early is reported to be in critical condition; Sutherland in stable condition. Both were transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., for treatment.
Brian Early was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Authorities told the Associated Press the plane lost contact with the control tower at Stewart International Airport shortly before 2 a.m. after a failed first approach due to fog. One of the passengers called 911 after the crash; approximately three hours later rescuers located the wreckage.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to these two students and their families in this time of tragedy,” said Lynchburg president Kenneth Garren in a note to the campus community. “The LC family is here to support them in whatever ways we can, given such a traumatic event.”
