Dubuque promotes assistant to top spot

Dubuque athletic director Dan Runkle announced the promotion of Robbie Sieverding to head men's basketball coach at Dubuque effective Oct. 1.

Marty McDermott, current head men's basketball coach, has accepted a position as director of athletics at Muskegon (Mich.) Community College. He was 42-57 in five seasons with the Spartans.

"I am pleased to welcome Robbie Sieverding to our full-time head coaching staff," said Runkle. "Robbie has the game skills, the leadership, and the commitment to move the Spartan men's basketball team through successful seasons. He is well-respected by the team and I believe this will be a smooth transition for our student-athletes."

Sieverding has been an assistant basketball coach and head men's golf coach at Dubuque since 2002. A standout student-athlete at Marquette High School, he continued his athletic career at Marshalltown Community College from 1997-98, transferring to Northern Iowa where he played from 1998-2002. Sieverding received All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2000 and 2002; along with finishing his career sixth on the school's all-time list for points and assists.

Sieverding graduated from Northern Iowa with a bachelor's degree in general studies with a minor in coaching in 2002.
