Defiance announced it has hired Dic Doumanian as coach of the women's basketball program. Doumanian will begin as the head coach on Aug. 1.
DC athletic director Dick Kaiser announced Doumanian's hiring saying, "I am excited about having Coach Doumanian on our staff. He brings over 16 years of collegiate coaching experience, which includes the past seven years as a head coach. The past three years Coach D' has put up some gaudy numbers by going 68-27 and getting his team to the national tournament.
"It is important to this program that we continue to seek a high level of excellence because our players, their parents and our fans expect it."
Doumanian brings 19 years of basketball coaching experience on several levels with him to Defiance and posted a career head coaching mark of 120-82 during seven years at the helm of the Kellogg Community College women's basketball program.
“I am really excited about this great opportunity to be part of the fine tradition of women's basketball here at Defiance College,” Doumanian stated. “My goal is that we will have a team each year that the campus and community can be proud of both on and off the court.”
While at Kellogg Community College, Doumanian led his Lady Bruins to a great deal of success in the classroom and on the court. In three of Doumanian's seven seasons at KCC, the women's basketball team led the entire athletic program in team grade-point average. The Bruins excelled on the hardwood as well, going 24-7 in 2006-07 en route to winning their second Michigan Community College Athletic Association Championship in the past three seasons. The first championship came at the end of a 30-5 campaign in 2004-05, which saw the Bruins make their first appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in school history. Each MCCAA Championship resulted in Doumanian being selected as the league's Coach of the Year.
During his seven years as a head coach at KCC, Doumanian's teams became known for their up-tempo style which placed them among the top ten teams in the nation in scoring in each of the past three seasons. In 2006-07, the Lady Bruins had four players average in double figures while netting 77.9 points per contest and holding the opposition to 61.4.
Prior to taking over the reigns of the program at Kellogg Community College, Doumanian spent time as an assistant coach for the men's and women's basketball teams at IPFW from 1991-1997, and had brief stints on the coaching staffs at Mercyhurst and Clarion.
Along with a lengthy coaching background, Doumanian has also worked as an athletic director, sports information director and a college professor.
The Livonia, Mich., native graduated from Michigan State with a degree in journalism, before earning a master's degree in education from Clarion in 1990. Doumanian will be taking over a Lady Jacket team which went 14-11 this past season, without a senior on the roster.
