Salem State hires Harvey

Former Lasell coach and current Tufts assistant Chris Harvey has been named head men's coach at Salem State. Harvey will also fill the role of compliance coordinator for all of the college's student athletes.

Harvey replaces Sean Doherty, who after four seasons, departed in April to become an assistant coach at Division I Quinnipiac.

"Chris is well known in New England basketball circles after his tremendous success at Lasell College," said athletic director Tim Shea. "He is a proven recruiter and the perfect fit for our program."

Harvey directed Lasell to three consecutive NCAA Division III tournament appearances while being chosen North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year each season. Harvey averaged over 20 wins a season while guiding the Lasers to a program record 25 victories in 2003-04. His winning percentage of .743 (104-36 record) ranks him in a tie for seventh place among the winningest active Division III head coaches with a minimum of five years experience.

Harvey served as an assistant at Tufts the past two seasons helping the Jumbos achieve a school-record 23 victories and an NCAA Sweet 16 tournament appearance.

"Salem State has always been my dream job, " said Harvey. "The only thing missing from the men's basketball trophy case is a national championship. I want to be a part of bringing that to the college. It's an honor for me to be a part of the tradition of excellence that has been built at Salem State."

Salem State went to the Final Four in 2000.

Harvey, who is a 1994 graduate of Worcester State, received his masters in education in 1998 from Boston University. He began his college coaching career in 1998 when he served the Lasell program as an associate head coach for two seasons before taking over as head coach in 2000.
