After playing just eight games in the past two seasons, SUNY-Maritime formally dropped its women's basketball program today, July 9, along with wrestling and men's tennis.
The team, which was outscored by 60.6 points per game in its abbreviated 2006-07 campaign, listed 11 players on the roster, four of whom were seniors. The Privateers shot 20.4% from the floor and 39.1% from the foul line on the season. The team's last win was Jan. 19, 2005, against New Rochelle, but the two-plus season losing streak spans just 19 actual contests. SUNY-Maritime was 0-7 this past season.
"Due to monetary constraints and low participation rates the last three seasons in these sports, it is necessary to discontinue them. Hopefully, at a later date this year, we can discuss their reinstatement," said athletic director Russ Ketcham.
The school offers 15 sports with Division III championships. The winless wrestling team had nine on the roster and men's tennis featured 14 players, eight seniors, in finishing 3-8.
SUNY-Maritime's women's basketball program had not participated in the Skyline Conference since the 2004-05 season.
