The first round of the 2007 men's tournament had some fantastic finishes with two buzzer beaters and two overtime games. One game featured both with Bryan Williams hitting a three as time expired to lift No. 11 Whitworth over DePauw 62-59 in overtime. The Pirates will face No. 8 Washington U. tomorrow night.
Plattsburgh State erased bad memories of last year's first round loss in dramatic fashion as Anthony Williams nailed a 30-foot three pointer at the buzzer to give the Cardinals a 61-60 win over Rochester. The basket gave Plattsburgh State its only lead of the second half. Last year the Cardinals lost a first-round heart breaker at Hamilton.
Brandeis shook off a five-point deficit with under three minutes left to force overtime where the Judges beat No. 20 Trinity (Conn.) 77-70. Steve DeLuca scored 24 points, including 10 in the extra session, in the victory. Brandeis will meet No. 21 Rhode Island College who ousted cinderella Coast Guard 64-60. The other New England cinderella, Williams, also lost, falling to Brockport State, 74-66. The Golden Eagles get St. Lawrence next. The Saints held off a late rally from Elms to prevail, 85-79.
Two teams who were question marks entering the tournament showed they belong. No. 10 Hope cruised past No. 12 Chicago 76-54 behind 32 points from Stephen Cramer. Stevens made its NCAA tournament debut a happy one, defeating No. 18 WPI 68-57. The Ducks won despite shooting just 18-for-38 from the foul line, and get an all-New Jersey showdown at Ramapo, which knocked off CUNY champ York.
It's tough to win on the road in March, and only one of the 11 men's teams that tried on Friday did. That would be Calvin, which edged out Aurora, 69-68. Derek Griffin scored 17 points to pace the Knights. Around the Nation subject Matt Griffin (no relation that we know) had 24 as Johns Hopkins rallied from a double-digit deficit to upend Villa Julie 84-72. The Blue Jays shot 57% from the field in the second half in the victory, limiting the Mustangs to 25 percent. It was a good day to be named Griffin, but not the best to play for the Griffins, as Fontbonne fell at neighbor Washington U., 77-58.
It was a night of the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Guilford put up 101 points in its win over Manhattanville, shooting 61% for the game. On the other end of the scoring spectrum, Messiah tallied only 37 and was blown out by Catholic, 58-37.
No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan avoided the defending champ jinx on opening night, rallying to beat Averett, behind the 2,000th career point for Brandon Adair. Hope, the women's champ, fell to Denison. Scroll down for more on that game. All men's finals on the scoreboard.
