No. 24 Ohio Northern's roller-coaster season may have come to a crashing end in the OAC quarterfinals. Otterbein sunk the Polar Bears 52-51 on a Tyler Ousley runner as time expired. The loss is ONU's seventh in region, putting them far out on the bubble for an at-large bid. Otterbein will meet top-seed Capital in the OAC semifinals on Friday.
While the CCIW tournament doesn't start until Friday, Wheaton (Ill.) won a game that was basically a playoff in dramatic fashion over Carthage 61-59. Preseason All-American Kent Raymond took the ball coast to coast for a layup with 3.5 seconds to vault the Thunder into the CCIW semifinals where they will meet No. 14 Elmhurst on Friday. Wednesday's men's scores.
Widener beat Messiah 91-84 in double overtime, likely making the Falcons the first Pool C lock of the season. Messiah is 16-4 and slotted second in the most recent regional rankings. Widener will travel to Juniata for the MAC Commonwealth title.
Lewis and Clark topped Puget Sound 66-60 to reach the Northwest Conference final at Whitworth. Abe Williams scored 20 points as New Jersey City won its 12th consecutive conference game 79-69 over Rutgers-Newark. The Gothic Knights will meet Ramapo, who beat Rowan 92-84, in the NJAC finals.
The NEWMAC was upset-city on both sides. In men's action seventh-seed Coast Guard stunned second-seed Babson, avenging two defeats earlier this season. Junior guard Grant Johnson made his first nine three-pointers in the win. The Bears will face six-seed Wheaton which shocked third-seed Springfield 61-54. The women's semifinals pit host WPI against Wheaton (Mass.), which beat Clark 74-72 on a last-second shot by Becky Aitchison, and Mount Holyoke against Babson, who upset higher seeded Springfield.
In other women's action Preseason All-American Kelsey Duoss was held scoreless in the second half but No. 17 UW-Stout still skipped past UW-River Falls 70-59 and into the WIAC title game. The Blue Devils will meet UW-Eau Claire who dominated UW-Platteville 73-41. Wednesday's women's scores.
Old conference rivals will meet one last time in both of the MAC women's championship games on Saturday. On the Freedom side No. 4 Scranton defeated Drew 83-67 while King's dumped DeSales 83-78. In the Commonwealth No. 5 Messiah stifled Susquehanna 59-32 to set up another championship game with Moravian, who bounced Albright 68-61. Scranton and Moravian are both leaving the MAC after this season.
