The 10 finalists for the prestigious Jostens Trophy were announced today by members of the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. The award, which honors the top Division III basketball men's and women's student-athlete of the year, is based on three criteria: basketball ability, academic ability and community service.
Last year's awardees were Megan Silva of Randolph-Macon and Chris Braier of Lawrence.
The women's finalists: Debbie Bruen, Mary Washington; Catherine Chappell, Milwaukee Engineering; Eileen Flaherty, Bowdoin; Lindsay Ippel, Millikin; Lacey Kennedy, Mississippi College; Taryn Mellody, Scranton; Brianna Monahan, Gustavus Adolphus; Kelly Peters, Wilmington; Danielle Tinkoff, North Central; Lisa Winkle, Calvin.
Men's finalists are Justin Baker, Mary Washington; Ryan Cain, WPI; Zach Freeman, Illinois Wesleyan; Matt Griffin, Johns Hopkins; Kevin Guyden, Mary Hardin-Baylor; Derek Hines, Franklin and Marshall; Michael Hoyt, Mt. St. Mary; Joe Werner, UW-La Crosse; Drew Wessels, Augustana; Dan Wheeler, Amherst.
A national panel, including D3hoops.com's Pat Coleman, votes on the 10 finalists, ranking them 1-10. The winner is notified and the trophy, which stands two feet tall and weighs more than 60 pounds, is awarded in Salem, Va., on March 15, the day before the tipoff of the Final Four.
