No. 9 Augustana captured its second consecutive CCIW regular season crown with an 80-77 win against Illinois Wesleyan. The Vikings have won three of the past five CCIW regular season titles and earned home court advantage through the CCIW tournament.
Dan Walton scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help North Central defeat No. 12 Elmhurst 89-74, keeping the Cardinals' postseason hopes alive. North Central is tied with Carthage, who survived North Park 85-79 in overtime, for the conference's fourth and final playoff spot.
Two days after UW-Stevens Point reclaimed the number one ranking nationally, the Pointers wrapped up home court for the WIAC tournament with a 69-58 victory over UW-Platteville. Jason Price scored 27 points as UW-Whitewater drilled No. 5 UW-Oshkosh 88-71. The loss drops the Titans into a second-place tie with No. 18 UW-La Crosse, who owns the tiebreaker advantage over UW-Oshkosh.
On Valentine's night Marymount and Salisbury showed they love basketball, playing five overtimes before the Saints finally defeated the Sea Gulls 126-122. The game ties a Division III record for most overtime periods and is the second five-overtime contest of the season, following SUNY-Maritime/Massachusetts College on Nov. 28.
The points flowed less freely in California where No. 19 Occidental slipped by California Lutheran 41-40 to forge a first-place tie in the SCIAC. The Tigers missed two free throws with four seconds left but the Kingsmen missed a shot to win at the buzzer.
A few hours after the NCAA released the second regional rankings of the season, two top-ranked teams took losses. In the Middle Atlantic No. 24 Johns Hopkins fell at Gettysburg 65-58 while Penn State-Behrend took down Lake Erie 66-60 in OT in the Great Lakes. More men's scores here.
On the women's side No. 2 Calvin shot just 18.8 percent from the free throw line (3-for-16) but hung on to beat Olivet 66-62. Audrey Graham scored 27 points for the Comets in the losing effort.
No. 17 Lake Forest also survived a scare as Monmouth erased a 17-point second half deficit before falling to the Foresters 95-86 in OT. Lake Forest is the top ranked team in the Central region. Maryville (Mo.) is unranked in the same region but clearly dominates the SLIAC. The Saints pushed their conference win streak to 58 games with a 86-61 trouncing of Westminster (Mo.).
