No. 1's survive; Aurora does not

Both No. 1 teams survived their first games on top of the poll, but Aurora found one of its new conference rivals too much to handle.

The No. 18 Spartans fell at Wisconsin Lutheran 87-82 on Tuesday night for their second conference loss in the Northern Athletics Conference. Aurora came to the league from the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference; LMC came from the Lake Michigan Conference.

Elsewhere, No. 1 Messiah routed Juniata in women's action 63-32, while No. 1 Amherst pulled away from Rhode Island College 62-48 behind 23 points from Tim McLaughlin.

Puget Sound had to end the game on a 23-5 run to avoid losing for the third consecutive time. The Loggers rallied at home against Pacific Lutheran. And Grinnell continued its run, winning for the eighth consecutive time in a 127-111 decision at Monmouth. The Pioneers remain atop the Midwest Conference thanks to 30-for-34 free throw shooting and 43 points from John Grotberg.

No. 17 Mary Washington rallied from five points down with 1:36 left, forced overtime and won 89-81 at Bridgewater (Va.). No. 2 Bowdoin held off archrival Bates 58-50.
