Marlins survive in opener

No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan began this season just as it finished last season, hitting a shot late to beat a ranked opponent. With 15 seconds left, freshman guard Stephen Fields scored to lift the Marlins over No. 18 Christopher Newport 72-71. CNU drops to 0-2 with the loss. No. 25 UW-Stevens Point knocked off its second ranked MWC team in four nights, holding off No. 13 Lawrence 70-67. The Pointers led 61-45 before the Vikings rallied to cut the lead to one with 17.2 but Chris Page missed a potential game-winning shot for Lawrence.

In women's action Maggie Miller and Meghan Stetson combined for 47 points as Williams defeated Springfield 75-62. No. 14 Rochester followed up its win over top-ranked Scranton by beating No. 24 Medaille on the road 48-46. Megan Krebbeks' basket with 1.9 left was the margin of victory.
